Hidden Sugar in Your Burger fast food nutrition

McDonald’s

Your Fast Food Hamburger - How sweet it is!

According to the American Heart Association:

Men should consume no more than 9 teaspoons (36 grams or 150 calories) of added sugar per day.

Women should consume no more than 6 teaspoons (25 grams or 100 calories) per day.

A single McDonald’s hamburger has 5 grams of sugar. That’s a full teaspoon of sugar in your hamburger!  Don’t take my word for it.  See for yourself here: https://www.mcdonalds.com/us/en-us/about-our-food/nutrition-calculator.html

Why does a hamburger have sugar?  Using their nutrition site above, it appears that 4 grams of sugar is in the bun and 1 gram is in the ketchup.  If you want cheese on your burger, it will add another gram of sugar.

Props to McDonald’s for giving consumers the ability to modify the various ingredients and see the nutrition impact.  Pretty cool.  But it doesn’t excuse putting unnecessary sugar into their products.

If you prefer Burger King, I’ve got bad news for you.  Their hamburger has 7.1 grams of sugar!  Again, don’t just take my word for it.  It’s right on their website:  https://www.bk.com/nutrition-explorer

The BK nutrition site isn’t as informative as McDonald’s, but the point is clear.

If you are concerned about the amount of sugar in your diet (you should be), consider enjoying your hamburger with no cheese, no bun, and no ketchup.  Better yet, just enjoy a healthy meal at home.
